"Adjustments to planned activities on the Square." That line is in the City of Covington's list of things to expect from the 2026 Downtown Square Utility Improvement Project. It sits next to lane closures, sidewalk detours, and work hours from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. The city planned for about 20 to 28 months of work starting in mid-June 2026, and its June 22 update put the start of initial work at July 6. So this is the first October in a long while where the Square looks different from one weekend to the next.
Most October roundups list events. A downtown weekend this month, though, depends on three schedules at once: the city's event calendar, the Vampire Diaries fan calendar, and the construction update the city posts about once a week. Read together, they show which Saturday the Square is closed to cars on purpose, which weekend the visitors come, and which block is behind a fence.
Crews are replacing old sewer, water, and gas lines, installing a new power and telecommunications duct bank, and repaving and restriping streets. The work area covers a 9-block perimeter around the Square. It has moved in phases. It started at Hunter and Usher in July, shifted to Pace Street in early September, and moved to Floyd Street between Pace and Elm in late September.
Here is October with all three schedules on one page:

Two big city events, Live at Legion and Trick or Treat, take place at Legion Field on Mill Street, well outside the fenced blocks. The events on the Square itself are the Thursday lunch concerts, the Fall Festival, and the foot traffic the fan weekends bring.
On September 18, the city said crews would move to Floyd Street between Pace and Elm around September 23 or 24. It expected that closure to last until about October 12 and said it could run longer. The October 2 update gave more detail:
During the week of October 5, 2026, crews will complete the remaining sewer work and begin transitioning into installation of the new water infrastructure along Floyd Street. Water improvements are expected to continue for approximately the next two weeks.
The same update says the Floyd closure will stay in place while that work continues. It also says all downtown businesses and government offices will keep their normal hours, with access maintained. The September estimate of about October 12 no longer holds. Two weeks of water work starting the week of October 5 runs into festival week.
Meanwhile, the week's events go ahead. The Live at Lunch schedule still lists Midnite Cruzer in Square Park today at noon. Tomorrow night, Live at Legion presents The Evolution of Beyonce at Legion Field. The show is free, gates open at 6 p.m., and food trucks will be on site. The city asks guests to bring a chair or blanket. The Legion Field lot is limited to handicap parking, and golf carts park at the back of the field. Also on Friday, the Covington Ghost Tour leaves WildArt Gallery at 1105 Washington St. SW at 7 p.m. Tickets are $30 plus a $0.75 service fee, and the tour takes about 2.5 hours.
The Covington Fall Festival runs Saturday, October 17, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The city says the Square will be closed to vehicles for a pedestrian-friendly event. Plans include vendors, games, music, a nonprofit fair, a petting zoo, face painting, food, and deals from downtown merchants. Vendor applications for 2026 are closed.
A planned closure for the festival on top of a construction closure means that, for one Saturday, getting around downtown is all on foot. The city has already worked a weekend event around active construction once this fall. For the October 4 car show, it said Pace Street should stay open and crews would clean and organize nearby work areas ahead of time. No festival-specific construction plan has been published yet. The update posted the week before the 17th is the one to read. The city's guidance for pedestrians stays the same: use the marked sidewalks and don't cut through the work zone.
The week after the festival, the crowd changes. Vampire Stalkers' TVDU Fan Appreciation Weekend Year 2 runs from 10 a.m. on October 23 through 8 p.m. on October 25 at the Vampire Stalkers Mystic Falls Tours store, 1102 Monticello St. SW. Admission is listed as free. The schedule includes cast-hosted tram tours on Friday, October 23, at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Standard Mystic Falls tram tours cost $65 per person and leave from 1143 Oak St. Tickets for the individual cast events are sold by cast member.
The weekend extends beyond Monticello Street. On Friday evening from 5 to 9, Main Street Trolleys and Tours runs its own Fan Appreciation outing. It includes a sip-and-paint at WildArt, stops at filming locations, and a cocktail stop at Brees Bar. On Saturday, October 24, the TVD Universe Masquerade Ball takes over Lockwood Mansion at 2111 Anderson Ave. SE from 6:30 to 10 p.m. General admission is listed at $400 and VIP at $600, with higher prices after August 15. Free parking is at the Visitor Center, and trams carry guests to the mansion.
The fall Vampire Diaries festival Creation Entertainment advertises for Covington is not part of this month. Its page lists October 9–10, 2027. October 23–25 is the main fan weekend for 2026. Tragic Love plays Live at Lunch in Square Park the day before it starts, on Thursday the 22nd at noon.
The city's Halloween event is at Legion Field again. Trick or Treat on Legion Field runs Saturday, October 31, from 2 to 4 p.m. at 3173 Mill St. The city calls it an annual event held with the Covington YMCA.
The adult version starts later. Main Street Trolleys and Tours' "A Special Scream on Halloween" runs 4 to 8 p.m. on October 31 and is for ages 21 and up. The program includes a sip-and-paint, a visit to 12 Oaks, a haunted house, and filming locations. The company's Main Street Place store is where it meets guests and hands out tickets. The Live at Lunch performer for October 29 is still listed as TBA.
The city's updates mention downtown businesses mainly as landmarks. Its September notices said most of the parking lot behind Mystic Grill and Kuter's Cage would stay open to the public. Hendricks Street between Usher and Clark is set aside for staging for the whole project, according to the city's June notice.
These places near the Square have current hours or ordering listed on their own websites:
On the weekend of the 23rd, Clark Street and Monticello Street will be busy with fans. Church Street and College Avenue may make for an easier Saturday table.
The city posts each construction update on the project page and takes questions at [email protected]. It notes that schedules can change because of weather, field conditions, and utility conflicts.
